The expected teams are Shotgun (Saturday only), and: UTI First Touch Village Red Shift MohawkX MohawkY (mohawks are bringing two equal teams) SB1 Skunk1 Skunk2 SB2 Also, a few Ow, High Pie and Angels may pick up. Seedings -------- I want to make a good schedule for this tournament, and it will help to have an accurate seeding. Would you let me know if you think the following seedings are wrong? 0. Shotgun 1. UTI 2. First Touch 4. Village 3. Red Shift 5. MohawkX 6. MohawkY 8. SB1 7. Skunks1 9. Skunks2 10. SB2 In particular, I am unsure where I should put Skunks 1. Is 7 too low? Schedule -------- My schedule attempts to satisfy the following constraints: 1) Shotgun only play on Saturday, and play top teams only; 2) UTI and First Touch both want a late first game on Sunday. The planned schedule works like this: We play a big round robin tournie, except that a few games (for example 1v10 and 2v9) get left out, and only the top four seeds play shotgun. Final rankings are made using the infera software, taking all scores into account. Tournament champions are the top ranked team that played both days. At the start of Saturday, we play 4v5 and 3v6, to check that 3 and 4 deserve their seeding (and therefore get to play Shotgun). Each team plays four one-hour games on Saturday. Nearly all spaces between games are 30 minutes or more. At the end of Saturday, teams are ranked. Order of play on Sunday depends on this ranking. This is the deal (under the current tentative plan): If UTI and First Touch keep their seedings on Saturday, then their first games on Sunday will be at about 12.30. If they lose any games against lower seeds on saturday then their first game will be probably be at 10am. The schedule might look like this, with UTI and FT expecting to be in the A1,B1 slots if they keep their seeding. Every team gets 3 games on Sunday. 10 A2vB2 A4vB4 A3vB5 A5vB3 11.30 A2vB5 A5vB2 A3vB3 12.30 A1vB4 A4vB1 2 A1vB2 A2vB1 A3vB4 A4vB3 A5vB5 3.30 A1vB1 Are UTI and FT happy with this deal? If you want to party late on Saturday, you have to win on Saturday! Note that an inevitable consequence of having your first game at 12.30 is that you get three games in succession with only ~ 30 minute rest periods. Cost ---- First the bad news: The grounds on Saturday are more expensive than expected. I have negotiated a deal with the rugby club that includes soup and sandwiches on Saturday. We will also provide free tea and coffee on Sunday. Tournament fees are: (including soup/sandwich deal at 16 pounds per team) Non-student teams: 60 + 16 = 76 Student teams: 49 + 16 = 65 Shotgun (Saturday) 44 + 16 = 60 These fees include BUF taxes. I am sorry these fees are bigger than I hoped. It's the best I can do. I am not expecting us to make any profit on this tournament. The bar facilities and showers that we get to use on Saturday are quite nice (similar to Eastbourne), so I hope everyone will have a good time and feel they got good value. The bar will be open all day (until about 8pm Saturday). There will probably be a party at Darwin College Saturday night. Accommodation ------------- who's asked me for accommodation: Skunks, Red Shift, Mohawks. I am pretty sure we can give floor space to all Skunks and Mohawks. A few Red Shift may need to look on the open market. I'll let you know in a couple of days. Bed and Breakfasts: I can fax copies of tourist information to you or post it. Here are convenient bed and breakfasts in the Newnham area (walking distance to the grounds): (01223) Mrs Payne 328 996 Mrs Dathan 560 466 Mrs Callan 315 465 Mr+Mrs Beater 316 363 Here are some in Girton, which is a 15 minute drive away. 276 005, 276 641, 276 620, 276 103. http://wol.ra.phy.cam.ac.uk/ultimate/reg97.html SE regionals nov 1-2 A note to keep you fully informed about the tournament: :-( Village People and Shotgun are not coming. SLUT, Lurkers, Angels, Playthings have also said no. :-) So the line-up is at present nine teams, all attending both days: UTI First Touch Strange Blue Red Shift MohawksY Skunks1 Skunks2 MohawksX Strange Blue2 There are probably going to be some pickup players too, from all over. First priority for pickup goes to Mohawks. If there are enough pickups I hope we can form an entire 10th team. I am still hoping that more teams will sign up this week. If you know of any teams that may have slipped through the net, please give them my number. Dear Team Contacts (1) Latest news is that a Mad Kow team is probably coming, and quite a few pickup players, so I hope we will have ten or more teams. (2) *** Rosters for party: *** If you are interested in coming to the party, at Darwin College on Saturday night, please could you bring a roster to the captains' meeting on Saturday morning? We can then give the list of names to the barperson at Darwin (this is a regulation of the bar: visitors can get drinks only if we sign 'em in; the easiest way to do this is to get all the names beforehand). Thanks for your help! (3) We have a little floor space (non-smoking) left for people to sleep on on Friday and/or Saturday night. Please let me know if you want some floor. That means we have 9 definite teams and a possibility of a tenth pickup team if enough waifs and strays come along. (Please encourage pickup players to come!) I have drawn up two alternative schedules. I am sending them to you to get your feedback in case anyone thinks that they are bad schedules and need fixing. The nine and ten team schedules can be found here: http://wol.ra.phy.cam.ac.uk/ultimate/schedule/9.html http://wol.ra.phy.cam.ac.uk/ultimate/schedule/10.html and I will summarise them now: *please note in particular the suggested lengths of games and let me know if you think they are OK* Nine teams ---------- 9 teams play round robin in one pool. (Teams A-D should be the top seeds; other seedings irrelevant). Tentative seedings: A - UTI. B - First Touch. C - Red Shift. D - Skunks 1. E - Skunks 2. F - Strange Blue 2. G - Mohawks 1. H - Mohawks 2. I - Strange Blue 1. Round robin gives 4 games per team per day. Games are 45 mins long or to 13 points. Half time at 7 points. If time is reached, the running point is played out. No cap, no sudden death. Numbers of goals scored may influence final rankings. One timeout per half per team. Second half timeout may not be used after full time. Game times have been arranged so that A and B get a late start on Sunday, and play three consecutive games with only 15 minute breaks. The BC game is played on Saturday afternoon, and the AB game is played last on Sunday as a `final'. Final rankings will be made using the `infera' software. Ten teams --------- Saturday 10 teams in two equal pools of 5. Round robin gives 4 games per team. Pool A: UTI, Skunks 1, Pickup, Mohawks 1, Strange Blue 2. Pool B: First Touch, Red Shift, Strange Blue 1, Mohawks 2, Skunks 2. Games are 45 mins long or to 13 points. If time is reached, a cap of two is put in place after any running point has been played out. (Maximum permitted cap is 14). One timeout per half per team. Second half timeout may be used during the cap. Sunday inter-pool games. (Three games per team; teams ranked 3 and 4 may have an extra game if they beat higher seeds.) Games are 55 minutes long or to 15 points. Game times have been arranged so that winners of pools get a late start on Sunday. Final rankings will be made using the `infera' program. [Note that winning the final is not necessarily sufficient to win the tournament, if you lose some earlier games.] Yours, David http://wol.ra.phy.cam.ac.uk/ultimate/reg97.html ml britdisc frisbee tww93si@soton.ac.uk andrew.kayley@soton.sc.philips.com trovelld@ddbn.geis.com bikos@teaching.physics.ox.ac.uk yue_wu@il.us.swissbank.com david.whitehead@gs.com kevinbr@epunix.susx.ac.uk patrick.winser@merchants.co.uk
