Thanks to OW for organising a tournament at short notice, and having things run smoothly even though a few teams cancelled their entry very late. Spirit was shared between Strange Blue and Mohawks 2 (playing ironman). Saturdays play saw Mohawks come top of their pool, after a tight game with Gooey which they won 8-7. In the other pool, OW! and Strange Blue defeated all opposition to set up a crunch game against eachother, which Strange Blue won 10-3. The shock of the day was Cranfield beating Gooey in the crossover pool, which knocked Gooey out of a semi-final spot. Sunday morning began with a tense game between Mohawks and OW!, which OW! began fiercely, taking a 2-1 lead until the Mohawks gathered themselves and took the game, 9-5. The first semi-final pitted OW! against the undefeated Strange Blue, with OW! determined to overturn the previous days defeat. An epic first point lasting 10 minutes or so eventually finished with OW! breaking the Cambridge zone to take the lead, which they never gave up winning 4-2 in a game dominated by defence. Mohawks shut-out Cranfield in the other semi to set up a rematch with the hosts OW! in the final. I don't remember much of this game, the atmosphere was so electric, I know it was 5-5 and then 7-7, when a crucial point block and layout D from the Mohawks saw them take a 9-7 lead which OW! couldn't quite come back from. Final score 9-8. A great tournament, ending in a great final. See you in Leeds. Hi all, The final team that ended up going to Oxford for the Student Regionals was Luke, Adrian, Dora (on Sunday), Ico, Alice, Craig, Karsten and me. Our first game was against Cranfield (captained by Aaron) who we knew to be fairly inexperienced. We spent this game getting used to each others play and the size of the hall. It was by far our worst game with many over-enthusiastic hammers and poor percentage passes. We ended up just winning 6-5 in sudden death. In the next two of our pool games we played increasingly better beating Babblers (captained by Adam, a.k.a. Jabba) and Mohawks II. Our final pool game was against OW! (Oxford Uni 1st team) who were also undefeated so far. We had a phenomenal game against them, played with huge amounts of energy. We were the only team who made good use of the hammer corner (thanks Matt and Chris for stressing this at practices) and picked up many points from some well thrown hammers. Our end-zone D was also very effective and forced many turnovers. The final score of 10-3 doesn't reflect how hard fought it was. Our last game of the day (at 7.30!) was against Gooie Kaplooie (4 GB juniors and Dodgy/Mark) which we just managed to win 7-6 after being 6-4 down 3 minutes before time. On Sunday we started again against Cranfield. By now we were playing very comfortably together and we won it about 6-3 to get top seeding in the semis. We met OW! ogain who came out amazingly psyched-up and determined to win it. The first point lasted for over half the time with them patiently playing our zone and us missing a couple of crucial chances until they finally scored. As they had the lead they relaxed and continued to play too calmy for our zone to force many turnovers, finally winning 4-2. We played Cranfield yet again in the 3/4th play off and won it comfortably to end up third. The final was a very impressive game of OW! against Mohawks 1 which was won by the Mohawks at around 8-7. As far as our overall play went we made very good use of the hammer corner and an end-zone zone defence. A large percentage of our points were scored by punishing slack defence to get free and receive a hammer in the end-zone. Our biggest problem was scoring from close to the end-zone we were attacking. Despite trying to have only two players in the zone we rarely managed to get clear cuts and the end-zone always seemed to be covered by defenders. The best team on completing the final scoring pass was OW! who always got two coordinated cuts, one to each side, from two players who were previously stacked and stationary in the centre of the end-zone. (This was why we chose to throw zone against them and why it was so effective the first time we met them). There is a lot of potential for improving our coordination in the end-zone and trying to better our percentage of completed scoring passes. We played some very good ultimate over the weekend and got some great results. I think everyone also mananged to enjoy the weekend hugely (I certainly did). We were evidently fun to play against as we split the spirit prize with Mohawks 2, which was a great way to end the weekend. Well played everyone, Graham.
